Lewis Hamilton was the reigning world champion of the drivers at the start of the season, his team Mercedes is the reigning world champion of the constructors.
After the thirteenth Grand Prix of the season, the Emilia-Romagna 2020 Grand Prix Formula 1, the Mercedes team had a sufficient lead for the seventh consecutive victory in the constructors' championship.
After the fourteenth Grand Prix of the season (Turkey), Lewis Hamilton became world champion for the seventh time.
On August 29, 2019, the FIA announced a provisional calendar for the 2020 Formula 1 season. On October 4, the calendar was finally approved. The season would have a record number of 22 races. Several races have been postponed or canceled due to the corona pandemic. A revised calendar was announced on June 2, 2020, supplemented with additional races until August 25, 2020.
